On Saturday, February 12, 2011, just short of 100 members and friends of the Elon MBA Student-Alumni Association spent the evening at the Fourth Annual “Cocktails and a Musical” event at Elon’s Center for Fine Arts.  This event, which has always been held on Valentine’s weekend, has evolved into one of the most popular of the year.  Ethan Sabin, an MBA alumnus, commented about the event, “My wife and I always know how we are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day—at Cocktails and a Musical—of course.”  “I never have to make plans—and the event is great fun.”

This year, the event started at 5:00pm with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar in the Isabella Cannon room—right across the hall from the McCrary Theatre, where the musical was performed.  The mashed potatoes served in martini glasses with a choice of toppings and the chocolate fondue are always  a huge hit.  Chris Chipman, the husband of Holly Stewart, an MBA alumna, graciously brought his equipment and provided the music for the event.  Betty Rouse won the door prize, which was a $25 gift certificate to B. Christopher’s Restaurant in Burlington.

This year’s “Cocktails and a Musical” event featured Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award winning musical RENT, a provocative, rocking show inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème. RENT captures the heart of a generation as it celebrates art and art-makers, counter culture otherness, life, love and faith in a group of friends on the verge of the millennium circa 1996.  Elon’s performing arts department did not fail to wow us with its talent, yet again.

A fun time was had by all.  Go ahead and mark your calendar for next year.  You’ll be glad you did.
